TIMING BELTS

Timing belts are probably one of the most discussed and cussed of all automotive components.Everyone has his own theory of replacement interval and usage. I will try to bring a little sense to this area.

Timing Belt Replacement Interval

  • The manufactures recommended interval for replacement is usually adequate if you read the whole recommendation. There is usually a little footnote that states that if your driving conditions exceed certain levels such as temperature and humidity, then your timing belt must be replaced more frequently.
  • In our area this is about 60,000 for most manufactures and the this is the suggested interval from most of the automotive industry.
  • Special events that might cause you to need to replace your timing belt even if the 60,000 mile interval is not up.
    • If your timing belt becomes saturated with oil or other petroleum products it should be inspected and probably replace.
    • Any misalignment of a timing belt requires it to be replaced and the condition causing the misalignment corrected.
    • Worn edges on the belt or nicks in the belt.
  • Some questions and answers about timing belts.
    • What is an interference engine? This is an engine that if the timing belt breaks or becomes significantly out of time it will cause the damage of internal engine parts.
    • Can I change my own timing belt? The answer to this is yes, if you have the correct tools, manuals and the necessary skill. Some vehicles are lot easier than others and there are a few that I feel should be left to experienced mechanics. I do not recommend that most do it yourselfers attempt the timing belts on dual over head cam engines as most of these are interference engines and a mistake can cost thousands of dollars.

IF YOU DON’T FEEL COMFORTABLE CHANGING YOUR TIMING BELT TAKE IT TO YOUR MECHANIC (Did I say that I meant Technician).
